# Three digit challenge writing a check

Part B of this approach means that a similar exploration must be carried out for these cases: carrying in the ones only carrying in the tens only carrying in both the tens and the ones Carrying in the ones is shown here as an example.

The software available from the Maths lesson below can be used to investigate this question.

## Digit challenge test

This is a contradiction, so, since there is nothing wrong with the reasoning, the original assumption must be at fault. The students may be able to work out these steps for themselves. Draw the picture above the definition on the vocabulary card. Then ask another three to make a second 3-digit number underneath this: Now we rule this off here use a blackboard ruler as the line and do a normal add up. The answer is 0 -- 7 divides into this new number exactly with nothing left over! Then, just like in tic-tac-toe, you try to get three X's in a row, because those will always add up to And so on. If they don't have a Social Security number, have them write down any 9 digits between 1 and 9. Ask your friend to look at the cards and tell you which row the chosen card is in. Read through the directions and call a student volunteer to the front of the classroom to model following the directions and solving the problem with you one of you will be partner A and the other partner B. Justify your reasoning. Clarify that base-ten form is when numbers are written in their corresponding place values 5 ones, 7 tens, 3 hundreds. Pass out one of the baggies to each partnership as well. The software available from the Maths lesson below can be used to investigate this question. Then deal the second row beneath it from left to right.

Keep students in partnerships and provide a whiteboard and whiteboard marker to each pair. But is there another way to approach the problem? For more ideas and discussion about this investigation, open a new browser tab or page and visit Maths Lesson 28, Number Tiles, which also includes companion software.

Then, just like in tic-tac-toe, you try to get three X's in a row, because those will always add up to Then have them rewrite it so that it is all scrambled up.

Therefore, if any solutions exist, they must involve carrying.
