Legal writing and research courses
In collaboration with the professor teaching the substantive course, the practitioner instructs students in drafting documents related to the substantive coursework.
In addition, the students will practice forms of legal writing that they, as clerks, will be drafting for their judges—a bench memorandum, a majority opinion, and a concurrence or dissent.

In addition to learning traditional research methods, students are also trained to use computer-assisted legal research including Lexis, Westlaw, and Bloomberg Law. During the first semester, in Lawyering Skills I, students will be placed in the role of lawyer as advisor and counselor by focusing on predictive, advisory writing while learning other lawyering skills such as fact gathering and analysis, interviewing, and client counseling. The Legal Analysis, Research and Writing Program is also distinguished by its use of writing faculty with substantial past law practice who have moved into the teaching of writing as their primary professional commitment and research faculty who are part of the Law School's professional reference librarians, all of whom are also lawyers.
